Just yesterday...
The Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) was formed in 1981 when
new Muslims to the area felt the need for an organization or a place
to gather them, preserve their Islamic identity and help them observe
their obligations as Muslims.
The start was in a hall reserved at MIT
that has been used ever since for daily prayers, Friday prayers
and for weekly seminars and classes. The hall was roomy enough for
50 to 60 Muslims who routinely gathered there. But as the society
grew, so did the need for space. It became necessary for ISB to
find an accommodating facility larger than what a university could
offer.
In
early 1990s, Muslims began the search for a suitable location and
finally a place was chosen near Central Square in Cambridge. With
Allah's help, Muslim brothers and sisters of the community generously
helped to transform the place into the Islamic Society of Boston Cambridge Mosque,
a place of their own, open for everyone.
And today...
Since its foundation in 1994, The ISB Center in Cambridge has
been one of the most important achievements of ISB. As a result,
ties between Muslims in the area continue to grow stronger, as well
as the relationship with the surrounding local non-Muslim neighborhoods.
ISB offers daily, weekly and annual programs
for Muslims including Arabic and English classes in Fiqh (improving one's Islamic knowledge), Seerah (Life of the Prophet), Tajweed (Recitation of the Holy Quran)
and memorization of the Qur'an for brothers and sisters. The society
also organizes trips and camps and Ramadan programs from iftar (breaking
of the Muslim fast), taraweeh and qiyam to the Eid prayers and celebrations.
ISB organizes summer camps for the youth
while it operates a weekend school for Islamic Studies and for the
study of Arabic. Notable efforts to
present Islam to non-Muslims have been conducted through mass-media
channels. Last year alone, 54 individuals
came to ISB and embraced Islam.
Finally, the ISB has been able to purchase
a rental property - as Waqf - an income used to cover a heavy annual
budget of the Center.
